Dear Mr. President:
On behalf of the people of the United States of America, I congratulate the people of Hungary as you commemorate the foundation of the Hungarian state and celebrate its continued unity and prosperity on Saint Stephen’s Day, August 20.
On this occasion, I would like to recognize the importance of the enduring partnership between the United States and Hungary, supported by a foundation of friendship and a shared responsibility to uphold and safeguard democratic principles, including transparency, tolerance, and the rule of law.
As we continue our efforts to surmount obstacles challenging these principles, and in the face of new and unprecedented threats to global security, Hungary’s commitment to the transatlantic family of nations is ever more vital to the preservation of peace and liberty in Europe and beyond.
The United States looks forward to working further with Hungary towards our common goal of a Europe whole, free, and at peace.
Sincerely,
Barack Obama
